Meet the Board

Michael Harney

Founder and Chairman

Mike is a Managing Director at FBR Capital Markets in Boston and is a graduate of Georgetown University where he played Division I lacrosse. Mike founded the Play Ball! Foundation in 2005 with the idea to provide Boston’s youth the chance to receive the same opportunity and benefit that athletics provided him as a child. "Play Ball! began with the simple goal of getting more feet on the field year in and year out, and with that focus we now have over 1,300 middle school students engaged in athletics.”

Pat Arcand

Pat is a partner at Arcand & Madison, a PR consultancy specializing in promoting high technology companies. A tennis player, skier and volunteer instructor, she is enthusiastically committed to creating more athletic opportunities for Boston middle school students. Pat believes being able to play and make friends through sports helps everyone succeed at school and in life. She graduated from Villanova University with a BA in English.

Scott Baughman

Scott is a Vice President at GW&K Investment Management where he oversees client relationships. He loved playing soccer, basketball, and lacrosse growing up and went on to play 4 years of college lacrosse at Georgetown University. He feels that youth sports taught him and can teach others important attributes including self-motivation, communication, sense of teamwork, and goal setting. He wholeheartedly believes in Play Ball!’s Mission – which allows those who might not otherwise get the opportunity to experience the benefits that youth sports can bring.

Rob Broggi

Rob is currently COO and partner at Nautilus Capital, LLC, a quantitative investment research and predictive analytics software firm. Prior to joining Nautilus, Rob was Managing Partner of Industrial Revolution II, a mission-based apparel manufacturer located in Haiti. He has a very innovative and unique skill set with respect to applying his analytical background to social issues. Rob has long standing local ties, growing up in Wellesley and having attended Roxbury Latin and Harvard University. He is a dedicated youth sports coach and serves on the board of Wellesley Youth Football.

John Dolan

John is an analyst at Herring Creek Capital responsible for investments in tech, media and telecom. He has 20
years of industry experience including 8 years at Tudor Investments as Director of Research and 7 years at
Morgan Stanley as an Executive Director. He holds a BA and MBA from Boston College.

Ian Franke

Ian is the Managing Director of Business Development at Institutional Insurance Group, a national firm focused on funding corporate benefit programs using institutional insurance products. He graduated from Colgate University where he played 4 years of D1 lacrosse, captaining the team his senior year. “Some of my most cherished memories come from my time playing youth sports. The sense of camaraderie, community, and competitiveness were all shaped by my experiences on the field or in the stands, with my teammates, coaches, and friends. I’m proud to be part of Play Ball! Boston because of the organization’s tireless commitment to providing these transformative experiences to kids in our communities.” Ian and his wife Mary live in Charlestown, MA.

Mike Frissora

Mike is the Operations Supervisor and co-owner of his family’s road construction business, Charles Contracting. The company specializes in underground utility and site work around the metro-Boston area. Mike played lacrosse at Middlebury College where his teams won 3 NCAA National Championships. He graduated Middlebury with a BA in History. Mike joined the Play Ball! Foundation with the goal of giving Boston’s youth an opportunity to develop emotionally and physically through organized team sports.

Eric Greenberg

Eric is a partner at Seyfarth Shaw, LLP. He received his BA from Tufts University and his JD from Northeastern University School of Law. Eric joined the Play Ball! Board in 2009 with a strong devotion to the benefits of athletics in children’s lives and the importance of increasing opportunities in the Boston area.

Patrick Harney

Patrick is a Client Advisor at Twin Focus Capital Partners, LLC. He grew up playing lacrosse and football in high school and played some lacrosse at Gettysburg College where he received his BA. “I believe in Play Ball! because of the universal belief among those who have participated in athletics that competing individually or on a team had a positive influence on their life and often continues to do so. This positive influence reinforces concepts like teamwork and community and because of that people want to give back. Play Ball! is a vehicle for those who benefitted from athletics to give back, creating future generations of athletes who will do the same.”

Matt MacDonald

Matt is a Partner with Ernst & Young LLP in Boston and joined the Board of Directors of the Play Ball! Foundation in 2007. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Fairfield University and was a four year member of the Fairfield varsity hockey team. Matt has always been involved in sports since he was three and fully supports the Play Ball! philosophy that involvement in sports programs at a young age can positively impact the development of and create new opportunities for young children.

George McGoldrick

George is President of Black Rock Development and Founding Owner of the Black Rock Country Club. He is committed to providing opportunities for youth to play and experience the camaraderie and life lessons sport teaches. George joined the board in 2012 and leads Play Ball!s annual charity golf tournament held at the Black Rock Country Club.

A. Peter Monaco

Mr. Monaco is a Managing Director and member of the Management Committee at Raptor Group Holdings, a privately held diversified investment holding company. At Raptor, Mr. Monaco has responsibility for evaluation of, and participates in the management and governance of, a wide range of investment and business initiatives. Prior to joining Raptor Group in January 2009, he was a Partner and Managing Director at Tudor Investment Corporation where he worked from August 1993 to December 2008 as a senior securities analyst. At Tudor, he also supervised and mentored others, assisted in the evaluation of portfolio managers and traders recruited to Tudor, served on the Firm’s Credit and Counter Party Risk Management and Government Relations and Regulatory Affairs Committees, and helped with the evaluation of strategic and proprietary capital investments. He began his career at Scudder, Stevens & Clark, Inc. where, from May 1987 to August 1993, he was a securities analyst and portfolio manager on teams with responsibility for international equity, international fixed income, and U.S. below investment grade debt portfolios. Mr. Monaco is a 1986 graduate of Harvard College, is active in a number of non-profit organizations, a member of the Board of Directors of various Raptor Group portfolio companies, and a member of the Board of the Massachusetts Pension Reserve Investment Management Company. (‘PRIM’).

Stu Porter

Stuart Porter is the Founder and the firm's Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer. Stuart brings more than 25 years of senior investment experience to Denham and currently serves on the Executive Committee, Investment Committee and Valuation Committee.

Prior to founding Denham Capital, Stuart was a founding partner of Sowood Capital Management LP. Previously, he served as a Vice President and Portfolio Manager at Harvard Management Company, Inc., where he focused on public and private transactions in the energy and commodities sectors. Stuart also worked for Bacon Investments and J. Aron, a division of Goldman Sachs. While at J. Aron, he worked on the Goldman Sachs Commodity Index desk. Before joining J. Aron, Stuart was a self-employed trader at the Chicago Board of Trade and was employed by Cargill Incorporated in Minnetonka, Minnesota in the Financial Markets Division. Stuart volunteers his time by serving on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and also serves as a Trustee of St. Sebastian's School in Needham, Massachusetts.

Stuart received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.

Betsy Rosen

Betsy currently consults as an outsourced marketing and executive director for nonprofits, with a focus on the education sector. Having experienced first hand the joy and life lessons team sports provide her teen sons, Betsy is deeply committed to helping Play Ball! expand sports opportunities to Boston Public Middle Schoolers and "get more feet on the field." Betsy has a BA from Williams College where she competed on the women's tennis team.

Brendan Sandel

Brendan is a Technology Account Manager at Oracle. A graduate of Colgate University, Brendan has been a strong supporter of the Play Ball! Foundation for more than 5 years. He became a Board Member in 2009 and is proudly dedicated to improving youth athletic opportunities for Boston’s middle school students.

Benjamin Small

Ben works for Birchview Capital, a healthcare investment company. He graduated from Bowdoin College and has been a part of the Play Ball! Foundation since its inception and has exemplified dedication to fundraising and the advancement of youth sports in the Boston area.

Pete Thamel

Pete Thamel is a senior writer at Sports Illustrated magazine. He’s covered college sports since graduating from Syracuse in 1999 for outlets like The New York Times, ESPN and the Syracuse Post-Standard. He's been involved with Play Ball! since 2012, helping with publicity and promotion of the programs and athletes.

Christine Tocco

Christine is the Traffic Supervisor at MMB and is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She enthusiastically became connected to Play Ball! with a strong desire to increase athletic opportunities for Boston’s youth and became a board member just one year later.

Annie Tomasini

Annie is the Director for Intergovernmental Relations for Harvard University. She graduated from Boston University where she served as a 3-year captain of the women’s basketball team. A member of the PlayBall! Board of Directors since 2011 and Boston native, she fully embraces the mission of PlayBall! and its growing partnership with the Boston Public Schools – helping to create a positive environment for young student-athletes across the City.
